This is a listing of links to web-sites which may be useful in discovering facts and information about the European Union, its organization, its members, and its dealings with other nations, such as the U.S.A. and Russia. Its purpose is to provide myself, my colleagues, and my students with links to sites which will give them access to knowledge they may need in order to research and keep abreast of political, economic, and cultural events occurring in Europe.
Governmental Sites:
EUROPA – this is the official governmental site of the European Union (EU). It provides a wealth of information on the organization, institutions, history, activities, and culture of the EU. The site has access to everything form current events information to a listing of important official documents. The site can be looked at in eleven languages as well. Date visited – 6/4/03.
EUROPEAN UNION GOVERNMENTS – this is a link within the main site of Europa which allows one to access the homepages of the EU’s 15 member states’ governments as well as the homepages for most of the other countries in Europe including Russia. Most of the governments do have the option of being seen and read in English, but not all. Many of the non-EU members’ sites are only in their native language. Each member state’s site includes access to information concerning everything from that nation’s history to its Gross national Product (GNP). Date visited – 6/4/03.

EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK – this is the official site of the EU’s central bank. It provides a wealth of information related to economic and monetary union (EMU) between the member states such as issues concerning the use of a single currency called the “euro.” The site allows easy access to official documents and publications of the bank and its policies and actions. It also gives an overview of the economic state of the EU and its surrounding neighbors. Date visited – 6/4/03.
EUROPEAN UNION ACTIONS IN THE U.S.A. – this site details the ongoing efforts of the EU to work together with the U.S. on a wide variety of subjects including everything from United Nations programs to the exporting of democracy and free markets to the rest of the world. It is constructed as a user friendly introduction to the EU as well as being part of an outreach program to Americans. The site provides access to several EU publications and includes an exhaustive A to Z site index on hundreds of topics dealing with Europe. Date visited – 6/5/03.
CORDIS – this site consists of nine databases that make up the European Community Research and Development Information service (CORDIS). All of the EU members as well as other European countries who are not yet in the EU have contributed a great amount of information on their research into the areas of science, technology, economics, and other high-tech innovations. The site is a bit on the technical side, but provides excellent data on European advances in the scientific fields. Date visited – 6/5/03.
FIRSTGOV – this site is the official U.S. government web portal to all its related sites and gives easy access through a search engine to all U.S. federal agencies. It provides up to date info on all that is going on within the U.S. government. This site can be used to find information related to the U.S.’s call for aid in the “War against Terrorism” can be found here. Date visited – 6/5/03.

Informational Sites on Europe and the EU:
EUROPEAN VOICE – this site is an online weekly new magazine on all of the happenings within the European Union. It is sort of a European version of “Time” or “Newsweek.” It is published out of Brussels, Belgium, which is the capital of the EU and the site of most of its governmental agencies. Though weekly, everyday the site displays the latest current events in politics, economics, sports, and fashion, among other things. Date visited – 6/6/03.

EU BANKING AND FINANCE NEWS NETWORK – this site is a European equivalent of an online “Wall Street Journal.” It details all the latest economic and financial trends as they happen. It gives an up to date view of how stock markets are doing all around the world with a focus on how world economic events affect Europe. It also has a search engine to find all manner of data concerning Europe’s economy across the continent. Date visited – 6/6/03.
EUROZINE – this is an online news magazine devoted to presenting a network/portal for access to European cultural and multilingual journals. It is put out by a non-profit organization and provides excellent access to journals from throughout Europe concerned with the most pressing issues facing the continent today. Date visited – 6/6/03.
EUROPE MEDIA – this site provides access to current news events all around Europe with a focus on EU member states. A calendar of EU events is present on its homepage. The site allows one to access articles on events by sector such as business or entertainment or by country such as Germany or Italy. There is an advance search engine that also works well in finding information on specific events. Date visited – 6/6/03.
RADIO FREE EUROPE/RADIO LIBERTY – this is the official site for Radio Free Europe, whose stated mission, as echoed in the United Nation Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is to provide all peoples everywhere with free access to information and truth around the world. Most people will recognize this organization from its reputation in World War II and throughout the Cold War for delivering the new to countries under the control o authoritarian and totalitarian regimes. The site describes the EU’ actions in this regard in such nations such as Afghanistan and Serbia. Date visited – 6/6/03.
Research Sites:
QUESTIA – this is the site for the Internet’s largest online library. You can find just about anything on Europe and the EU in here. The site gives access to near 400,000 online books, journals, and magazines. It has a comprehensive search engine and even offers paper writing and research suggestions. The link I’ve provided will send you right to the European Union subject heading. Date visited – 6/7/03.

OPEN DEMOCRACY – this site provides a treasure trove of information on all things affecting the world’s democracies. It bills itself as a channel for learning knowledge and learning partnerships. It has a search engine in which to look for subjects according to world regional subsections. In the case of the EU; articles on politics, globalization, science, and economics can easily be found. Contributors to this site read like a who’ who of world affairs. Well worth checking out to find out how the world’s other democracies react to the actions of the EU. Date visited – 6/7/03.

STATEWATCH – this site monitors the actions of the EU and the rest of Europe concerning the issues of civil liberties. It is run by a non-profit agency dedicated to making people aware of their civil rights. It provides information on how EU policies impact the health and legal rights and responsibilities of its constituents. This is a good site to check out articles detailing how the EU has dealt with subjects such as universal health care, abortion, and criminal law. Date visited – 6/5/03.
DOE/MOFFITT LIBRARIES OF GOVERNMENT AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES AT BERKELEY – this is the official web site of the University of California at Berkeley libraries dealing with documents and publications in the field of the social sciences. It its one of the largest in the U.S. and is particularly strong in the areas of foreign governments and international organizations. It is equipped with a search engine with which one can easily find a subject directory dealing with the EU and the rest of Europe. Date visited – 6/4/03.

WORLD NEWSPAPERS – this site is great for gaining access to links to news publications from around the world. One can easily search for almost any news publication by country or region with this site’s search feature. BBC – this is the official home of the venerable and respected British Broadcasting Company on the net. It provides excellent coverage of the news in Europe as well as around the world. It broadcasts in 43 languages across the world and is renowned for its reputation for solid reporting. Date visited – 6/4/03.
NEW YORK TIMES – though based in the U.S., the Times is world renowned for its coverage of world events. This site has excellent access to the paper’s international stories from day to day and has special focus on the events of Europe from time to time. Well worth checking out for an American perspective on the EU. Date visited – 6/6/03.
News Media Sites for Foreign Language Speakers:
LE MONDE – (For French Speakers) literally, “the world,” in French, this site is the home to France’ world renowned newspaper. Coverage on everything from politics to sports is Le Monde’s specialty and the y provide a distinctive view on the happenings in the EU as well as the rest of the world. It is available in 17 languages. Date visited – 6/8/03.
DER SPIEGEL – (For German Speakers) literally, “the mirror,” in German, this site is the online counterpart to Germany’s weekly news magazine. Der Spiegel is Germany’s answer to “Time” or “Newsweek.” The news they offer is particularly directed to Europe as a whole and not just to Germans alone. Date visited – 6/7/03.
EL PAIS – (For Spanish Speakers) literally, “the nation or country,” in Spanish, this site is the web-based home of Spain’s highly regarded newspaper. El Pais is well-known for having an excellent international news section and has many great articles concerning the economic situation in Southern Europe. Date visited – 6/8/03.
