Writing Trait #4 – Word Choice

INTRODUCTION:

Writers create a picture with the words that they use. The better a reader can visualize a writerŐs work, the better his understanding of the writerŐs meaning. It is your job as a writer to create the most vivid, accurate picture for your reader.

You can do this by using strong and clear words: verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc. Think of yourself as showing the reader your story rather than simply telling it!

INFORMATION:

Visit the site: http://www.kimskorner4teachertalk.com/writing/sixtrait/wordchoice/howto.html to read tips on using the Word Choice trait.

ACTIVITY:

1.     Read the rubric for Word Choice at http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/staff/LindaJancola/6Trait/wordchoice.htm

2.   On loose-leaf paper, answer the question:

á      How did the author organize the rubric to help you understand the information clearly? Explain using at least 3 examples from the text.

3.   Explore the map of the Caribbean Gardens Zoo, and find the ring-tailed lemur exhibition.

á      Write directions for getting from the zoo entrance to seeing the ring-tailed lemurs. Be very specific. I donŐt want to get lost!

4.   Writing prompt:

á      You are reporter for a local newspaper. Your assignment is to write an article to attract visitors to the Caribbean Gardens Zoo.

Remember: Always choose your words carefully!
