Writing Trait #1 - Ideas and Content

INTRODUCTION: Good writing begins with the IDEAS TRAIT. Finding good ideas for writing may sound easier than you think! Ideas can be terribly difficult to come by for even the best of writers. It is important to know what criteria are used to determine exemplary use of ideas in writing. Then you will be able to apply the ideas trait skills to your own writing.

INFORMATION: Visit the site: http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/staff/LindaJancola/6Trait/6-trait.html to read up on Ideas and Content criteria and student writing samples.

ACTIVITY:

  1. Read ÒWhat is 6-Trait Writing?Ó (Question mark) and then ÓIdeas & ContentÓ (light bulb) to understand the criteria for grading for Ideas and Content.

  1. In the ÒKidÕs CornerÓ (red crayon), choose at least 3 writing samples created by kids. Use the rubric in the ÒIdeas and ContentÓ section to help you score each of the writing samples you selected. On loose-leaf paper, record the scores and explain why you gave the scores you did for each writing sample. Be sure to include the title of each selection.

  1. Now itÕs your turn to write! Using Microsoft Word, type your response to the following assignment and print it out to turn in for a grade. Be sure your name is on your paper.

Assignment:

You are a natural scientist, researching a habitat for plant and animal life. You have encountered a never-before-seen animal! Write an article for the science journal, Animal News, describing your discovery, its looks and its life.
