Elective # 7-Search Tips
March 10, 2003
This paper is to provide students with tips for searching the Internet and give them the chance to practice what they learned.
Tip #1: Spelling Counts~ Be sure you have
spelled each term correctly so you receive the proper search.
Tip #2: More then one word~ Use more then one
word for a more specific result. Now it is time to practice. Click on the link
below. First, search for books. Then try searching for children’s books.
Tip #3: Proper Nouns~ If you are searching for
a word with a proper noun, capitalize it. If you search for white house you
will get everything with a white house in it, but if you search for White House
you will only receive what has white and house capitalized giving you a more
detailed search. Now try it with
the link above.
Tip #4: Quotation Marks~ You want to place
quotation marks around words that must appear next to each other. If you write
“White House” you will receive only sites that have White House
together. If you don’t use quotation marks you will receive sites that
have both words white and house in it.
Give it a try!
Tip #5: Using + and – in your search~ Use
a + sign if you want to search for two words in the same search. Use a –
sign if you want don’t want a word or phrase in your results. For example
try “White - House” and then try “White + House”, and
then “White House” and see what your results are.
Tip #6: Field Search~ This type of search
allows you to search for words in a specific part of a document. Use what is in
the parenthesis before the word you are searching.
