            The purpose of this bibliography is to provide a list of websites that may be helpful when teaching a unit on the country of Kenya.

 

Overview of Kenya

         

Map of Kenya.  Kenya is located in East Africa with a portion of it extending to the coast.  This site displays a detailed map of Kenya, providing also the bordering countries.  Mountains are shown in detail and the towns and cities are clearly labeled with main roads marked.

            Profile of Kenya.  This site contains general information related to location, population, climate, the capital (Nairobi), currency, trade and a brief description of the government.

            Languages of Kenya.  Kenya is a country with over 40 different ethnic groups.  As a result, some variations of language will occur.  This site provides a language map and description of the various languages spoken in Kenya.

The People

 

          Kenyans.  There are many different ethnic groups in Kenya, each with their own dialect.  This site provides a description of the major tribal groups, as well as some statistics-population, life expectancy, etc.  Several links are provided for those interested in more information about the different ethnic groups.

The History

 

          History.  This site provides the background of Kenya’s history with a time chart for graphic representation.  Early settlements are explored, the struggle for independence, the early government, heroes of Kenya, and the such.

            More History.  This site provides additional extensive history on the country-its origins and the events leading up to its eventual independence in 1963.

Government

 

          Political Parties.  This page contains a description of the various political parties of Kenya.  Included are:  NARC, New KANU, Ford People Coalition, Safina and Social Democratic Party.  Provides links for further information.

Culture

 

            Menus and Recipes.  This site contains information on the recipes Kenyans use to prepare their meals.  It provides a description on the proper etiquette of serving a Kenyan dinner and presenting a dinner to a Kenyan.

            Safaris.  This page provides a description of several different types of safaris tourists may be interested in taking.  The types of wildlife and environment of each safari are listed with links to look at other sites and pictures.

            Game Parks.  Kenya is known for the animals and botanical life that reside there.  This site provides links to each park in Kenya, detailing their sizes, geographical location, etc.  The map of Kenya is again visible with each park labeled.
