Citing Internet Sources

When writing a paper for an assignment, it is crucial that one remember to cite all the sources used to gather their information.  These sources may include books, periodicals, newspapers, magazines, and yes, the internet.  Citing sources on the internet has been a trying situation for many students of all ages.  Students desire to cite their sources appropriately, but often, the internet sources fail to provide all the necessary information.  The MLA (Modern Language Assoc.) style of citing resources requires a slightly different approach than the APA (American Psychological Assoc.) style.  For students using the MLA style of citation, I would recommend using the Skillman & Kirby Libraries-Lafayette College-Easton, PA website http://ww2.lafayette.edu/%7Elibrary/guides/cite.html.  This website provides the necessary information to students seeking to cite internet sources properly.  Listed on the website are the key components to a citation-including the author, the title, date of publication, URL, and date accessed.  Each component is described and an explanation of its location on the piece in question is provided.  For example, the student is told the access date is located on the bottom right hand corner on the printout from the web browser.  The website also identifies several key questions students may raise and then the authors of the website have proceeded to answer those questions and provide examples of when they may occur.  Some of these questions may include what to do if an author is not provided for a particular article found on the internet or what to do if the title of the article is not clearly identified.  The website also provides examples of how to cite information-ie. what order to place the information in-and compares the MLA style to those of APA and Chicago.  This would be a great quick reference for students if they become confused on information included in each style and in which order to place that information.
