Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to take a moment to welcome, both you and your student(s), to Miss Daniels’ class. This year has an endless amount of possibilities for you and your student(s) a big part of the classroom will be the use of the Internet for projects and assignments. We will be using the Internet to learn more about authors, books, and to find new information about authors we may not be familiar with. Your students will also be communicating one on one with other students from around the world. The Internet can be a very scary place especially for those who are unfamiliar with it but we will be taking the proper precautions to make sure that your students are safe while using the Internet.

As a class we will be discussing how to stay safe while on the Internet which can be used while online in the classroom and outside of the classroom. The sites that your children will be looking at and researching will be pre-selected and monitored by me prior to their use. The sites will include educational sites as well as search engines where the students will be able to type in a specific topic and find other web sites on that particular topic. Your students will also be using Instant Messenger and email which will help them to learn how to use these services safely and effectively for their personal use outside of the classroom. Each student will be provided with a nickname and a password to be used for both of these services and I will send home these passwords and nick names to you so that you can monitor your student as well. The rules that I have outlined in the Internet Use Guidelines will be monitored and followed and I ask that you read these guidelines over with your student, sign it, and return it to me as soon as possible. If used properly the Internet can be a fun and educational place for everyone!
