Lesson Plan Elective

I searched the web using Native American Lesson Plans as the search inquiry.  The sites listed below are five of the best lesson plans I found.  I have ranked from good quality and usefulness to the best.

5.  Native American Interdisciplinary Lessons: Good lesson that teach students about the stereotypes of Native Americans.  Teaches sensitivity and awareness, but does not supply many sites for background knowledge that many teachers would need to teach this

4.  Compare and Contrast Two Native American Cultures:  Good basic lesson.  Students research two different Native American tribes by clicking on their websites, and then a write a report or create a poster to compare and contrast.

3.  Eastern Woodland Shelters:  Students learn about the shelter of the Eastern Woodlands tribes.  The lesson has all the teacher requirements (goals, anticipatory set, vocabulary list) and outstanding connections to virtual websites for the students to visit.

2.  Native Americans Past and Present Unit: A lengthy but outstanding unit where students research and learn about five Native American tribes, past and present.  The site contains great resources for teachers, a bounty of background knowledge information, ideas for resources and lists of books to avoid.

And the winner is…..

1.  How to Teach About Thanksgiving: One of my favorite sites.  Not pretty, no colorful graphics, but outstanding background information, lesson concepts, vocabulary.  This is a compilation of lesson ideas written by Native American teachers. I would consider this lesson a must for any intermediate grade teacher who teaches about Thanksgiving.
