The election for the President of the United States is a very important event. Most citizens think the President is elected by a count of all the votes, called the popular vote but this is not true.  Each state is given electoral votes based on the population of the state.

Look at both the chart and the map links. You may find one easier to read than the other so choose your personal favorite. Click on either link below to answer the questions.

Questions:

  1. How many electoral votes does Maryland get?
  2. Which state gets the most votes?  How many votes does it get?
  3. What is the smallest number of electoral votes?  How many states have that number of votes?
  4. (You may use your calculator on this one) If one candidate gets the vote for all the states with eight or fewer electoral votes, and the other candidate gets the electoral votes for the state with the largest number of votes, which candidate gets the most votes?
