• During “Red Ribbon Week,” where we pledge to be drug and tobacco free, we have discussed the illnesses associated with smoking.
• For this assignment, you will look at and compare pictures of a healthy lung and of a diseased lung. The lungs in the title graphics are models of a set of diseased lungs and a set of healthy lungs. (Yes, you have two lungs!)
• Beware: The pictures you are about to see are of real lungs, and they’re not pretty.

Directions: Read each site description, then click on the sites. After you have viewed each picture, write two paragraphs using the prompts below.

This is a picture of a healthy lung. Notice that you can see the bronchial tubes (where the air goes in and out of your lungs) and that everything is red or pink as it should be. That big thing at the bottom near the middle that looks like a lump is the heart. Healthy Lung

This is a picture of a lung that has the disease cancer. This lung came from a person who had smoked cigarettes for many years. Diseased Lung

Your task:1

Write a paragraph comparing the healthy lung and the diseased lung. Make sure to include:

• What differences do you see?
• Why do you think the two lungs are so different?

Write a second paragraph telling what you have learned about smoking and disease.

• Give examples using your background knowledge and the information you have studied this week
• Conclude your paragraph with a sentence that gives your opinion about the effect smoking cigarettes has on lungs.
