Instructional Situations When Using Translation Tools

1. It is important that all parents have equal access to relevant information related to their child’s education. Translation tools will help teachers tailor newsletters and even report card comments to the parents’ main language.

2. Students can set a key pal program with students from a country where English is not spoken.

3. Students will be able to translate text and vocabulary in books that have terms used in a specific language other than English.

4. Students in a foreign language class can access printed material such as newspapers to become acquainted with current events in the country they are studying about.

5. Scholar material that is printed in a foreign language can be used in a research when translated to the language needed.

WARNING! While the translation websites can be very useful, you must be aware that the translations are not 100 % grammatically correct. The translations are literal and did not account for changes in word order between languages. In addition, the word selection is not always the best or most appropriate for the context of the text. I would use a translation website and then refine the text translation before considering it a finished final draft. I know that based on the Spanish translation of the text below and can’t speak for the other languages. My experience was the same with several translation websites.

Dear Parents,

The school year is quickly coming to an end. I want to thank you for all the support that you have given me and to your child. We had an amazing year full of learning. The students enjoyed learning about the environmental consequences of oil spills as they experienced first hand having to clean one. They also enjoyed observing the changes in the life cycle of the butterfly. We read many books this year, too. Some of the highlights of the year were the author studies and the fairy tales unit. We also learned to write for different intents. I know of a student who succeeded to persuade her parents to get her two puppies. The students took very seriously the task of publishing their writing pieces into their bare books and were very proud of the work. In math, we learned a lot of new concepts and took concepts learned in first grade to a new level of complexity.

As you can see, we had a busy year! I enjoyed being your child’s second grade teacher. Have a great summer and stay in touch.

El año escolar está acabando rápidamente. Deseo agradecerle por toda la ayuda que usted me ha dado y a su niño. Teníamos un año asombroso lleno de aprender. Los estudiantes gozaron el aprender sobre las consecuencias ambientales de los derramamientos del aceite como experimentaron el tener que de primera mano limpiar uno. También gozaron el observar de los cambios en el ciclo vital de la mariposa. Leímos muchos libros este año, también. Algunos de los toques de luz del año eran los estudios del autor y la unidad de los cuentos de hadas. También aprendimos escribir para diversos intentos. Sé de un estudiante que tuvo éxito para persuadir a sus padres conseguirle dos perritos. Los estudiantes tomaron muy seriamente la tarea de publicar sus pedazos de la escritura en sus libros pelados y eran muy orgullosos del trabajo. En matemáticas, aprendimos muchos de nuevos conceptos y llevamos los conceptos aprendidos en el primer grado un nuevo nivel de la complejidad. ¡Como usted puede ver, teníamos un año ocupado! Gocé el ser profesor del grado de su niño en segundo lugar. Tenga un gran verano y permanezca en tacto.

Cari Genitori,

L'anno scolastico sta terminando rapidamente. Desidero ringraziarlo per tutto il supporto che mi avete dato ed al vostro bambino. Abbiamo avuti un anno stupefacente pieno di imparare. Gli allievi hanno goduto imparare circa le conseguenze ambientali delle cadute dell'olio mentre hanno avvertito la prima mano che deve pulire uno. Inoltre hanno goduto osservare i cambiamenti nel ciclo di vita della farfalla. Abbiamo letto molti libri questo anno, anche. Alcuni dei punti culminanti dell'anno erano gli studi dell'autore e l'unità di racconti fairy. Inoltre abbiamo imparato scrivere per le intenzioni differenti. So di un allievo che è riuscito per persaudere i suoi genitori di ottenerle due puppies. Gli allievi hanno preso molto seriamente l'operazione di pubblicazione delle loro parti di scrittura nei loro libri nudi ed erano molto fieri del lavoro. Nel per la matematica, abbiamo imparato i nuovi concetti molto ed abbiamo preso i concetti imparati nel primo grado ad un nuovo livello di complessità.
