Dirt and Soil
Introduction: Our
next unit in Science focuses on the earth’s soil. We will look at websites that help us
determine the different layers of soil, their characteristics, and what
substances can be found there. Soil is
not just what we step on; there are many elements that make up the earth’s
surface that have different textures, colors, and particles
Visit the Discovery
School website and read the information and answer the questions below:
1. List the various layers of soil and 3 characteristics
of each.
2. Explain the difference between dirt and soil
Then, double click on the Name
that Soil button on the left hand side.
This takes you to another page that lists characteristics of gravel,
silt, sand, and clay.
Using information you have
gathered, determine…
1. What soil is best for plants to grow? Which soil is not good for
plant growth? Why?
2. What elements of soil need to be present for the
plants to thrive (clay, gravel, silt, or sand)?
3. What layer of soil would have the most silt? Clay?
