Current Events
Part 1
I reviewed USA Today, Fox
News, MSNBC, and Scholastic News for Kids. For my subject area, the two best
sites to find current events in sports for kids is Scholastic News for Kids and
Fox News. I evaluated these sites by looking at the overall outline and design
of the site as well as the content of the site. I took into consideration how
easy the articles were to read, if there was a subscription required, if the
site was cluttered and distracting, if the site used videos and pictures or
just text, and if the quality of the articles were useful, relevant, and
recent.

Using all the listed
criteria, I chose Scholastic News for Kids because the entire site is geared
specifically towards kids. This takes away the fear of kids reading articles
they should not be reading because the subject matter will be censored. The
events on the site are also more relevant to a younger audience. The articles
are in larger font with an easier vocabulary and many pictures, which will hold
the attention of kids. The only negative aspect of the Scholastic website is
there are not many videos to go along with the articles.

For the second best site for
students to find current events in the topic of sports, I choose Fox News. I
choose this site because the overall content of the articles is easy to read
and understand. The vocabulary is not very complex but a little more advanced
than the Scholastic site. The site is also easy to navigate with a list of
specific sports on the left hand site. There are also videos to search and a
list of current sports headlines that are more current and newsworthy.
