Instructional Modifications

 

This page provides a list of ten strategies or modifications that can be used to make web-based instruction more accessible to students who are blind/visually impaired or students diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. This page is meant to be helpful to teachers who teach students with these two disabilities.

 

 

Blind/Visually impaired:

1.      Provide Braille keyboards or large print resources

2.      Provide websites with videos rather than just readings

3.      Make the computer easier to see: brighten the screen and dim the lights in the room

4.      Provide websites with large, clear print

5.      Provide worksheets and instruction in large print, good quality Braille, and audio tape

6.      Monitor student to help with controls of computer and navigating the site

7.      Provide student with an aid to help read text on websites and navigate sites

8.      Provide websites and activities with audio/sound. (i.e. A live chat or lecture)

9.      Allow the student more time to type

10.  Silently observe the student and encourage independent problem solving

 

 

Attention Deficit Disorder:

1.      Visit sites with pictures and visual aids

2.      Only allow sites with minimal auditory distractions

3.      Allow frequent breaks from computer

4.      Monitor use of the internet to help keep the student on task

5.      Provide clear and well-defined worksheets so they know what they are looking for.

6.      Set time limits for specific tasks and time spent on certain websites

7.      Provide structure and clear limits for activities

8.      Provide websites that match students independent reading level

9.      Allow students more time to type assignments

10. Give short, brief assignments and tasks
