The History of Major Events in Sports

There have been many significant events in the history of sports which have resulted in the current state of sports as we know it. The purpose of this activity is to familiarize you with some of the historical events, compare and contrast them, and determine their significance.

Instructions:

1. Click on the above picture to access a website with a sports timeline. This timeline includes all major events in the history of sports. View the timeline and familiarize yourself with it. (NOTE: Click on the pictures to read more about each event).

2. Once you’ve viewed the timeline, select three sports/events and read the descriptions of the three selected events. After clicking on the picture that will take you to more information, there is a link provided at the bottom of the paragraph which will take you to an outside website with additional information on the event.

3. Compare and Contrast all three of your selected events. Consider the following: date of event, who was involved, what sport it involved, what was the outcome, etc. Use the graph below to compare and contrast your events:

4. For each of your three selected events, write a brief paragraph explaining the significance of the event. For example, how did the event affect the world of sports or a particular sport?
