Evaluating Websites:  Quickly and Critically

Using the internet requires the user to do two main things, scan information quickly and evaluate it critically.

 Other helpful tips include:

1.     Who is publishing this information?

·          Look at the URL or “about us” or “background.”

·         Is it a trusted source (well known or an individual?)

·         Check domain registration if unsure (networksolutions.com)

2.     What is the History of the site?

·         How long has it been around?

·         When was it last updated?

3.     What is the purpose of the site?

·         Is it for education, profit or promotion?

4.     How does the information compare to what you already know?

·         Compare the information to other sites on the same topic

5.     Is the site easy to navigate?

6.     Look at the “Links”

·         Has the site been recommended by trusted sources?

·         Are the links accurate and appropriate?

7.     Look at the site with a critical eye.

·         Is there a lot of advertising?

·         Does the site look professional?

·         Does the information seem accurate and unbiased?
