Mind Mapping

Today you will learn a bit about mind mapping. Mind mapping is an organizational technique that can be used in a number of ways. You will have the choice of using this technique for your pre-writing exercise.

Preparation: Before you begin the following activity, write down a few sentences describing what you think mind-mapping is. Have you used this technique in another class? If so, how was it used? Did you find it helpful? Why or why not? Write your thoughts in your journal.

Activity: Now read Austin Kleon's blog about mind mapping. Click on the link below.

Mind Maps: Pictures and Words In Space

When you finish reading, answer the questions below. Write your answers (complete sentences, please) in your journal.

1. In what five ways does Kleon use mind-mapping? Describe how he uses pictures and words in each different scenario.

2. What other ways could you use mind-mapping?

3. How could you use this technique as a pre-writing strategy for your short story project?

Now give it a try. On a separate sheet of paper, create a mind map using Kleon's examples as a guide. You may use any subject you wish. However, you must use your mind map in one of the five ways Kleon describes.
