Best Lesson Plan Sites for English/Language Arts Educators

The following sites are some of the best for English/Language Arts lesson plans. I’ve compiled the list based on organization, lesson development, and amount of available data. The sites are listed in the order that I think are most useful to English/Language Arts educators.

Web English Teacher

This is a great site for English/Language Arts educators. There are a number of ideas for plans ranging from grammar, to vocabulary, to reading, to ESOL, to many, many plans on individual authors, novels, and poetry.  There is much information on literature for children and teens, and the site covers multiple grade levels.  The lessons are well developed and link to additional resources such as literary criticism and author’s background information. ReadWriteThink

This is another great site for English/Language Arts educators. It is sponsored and maintained by the NCTE (The National Council of Teachers of English.) The lessons are well-developed and thorough. Lessons suggest multiple texts for usage, and give links to helpful graphic organizers and worksheets. In addition, the site hosts many interactive worksheets and graphic organizers that teachers can use with their students in the classrooms.  Lessons on this site are well-developed and exemplary. Site is organized well, and is easy to follow. Visited 11/19/09.

Teachnology: Language Arts Lesson Plans

This is a good source for teachers of all subject areas. The site contains a wide variety of lesson plans from multiple subject areas.  The English/Language Arts plans easily broke down by grade level, and all plans were organized alphabetically. Subheadings were located at the top of the screen, and lessons were listed beneath that. The lessons themselves were reasonably developed, and were easy to follow. The only things that could be improved are the aesthetics and organization of sub-sub headings. The pages were a bit busy, and there was no option to break down lesson plans by topic after selecting a grade level. But in all I thought that the information the site provided a great planning resource. Visited 11/19/09.

Education World: Language Arts

I really liked this site for the technology that was included in their lessons. There are a number of Language Arts lessons that use Microsoft Word and other resources to teach word choice. The lessons are well-developed and are available for multiple subjects. The one thing that did make looking through the lessons difficult is that they were lumped together under one collective subject, without sub-headings, or grade designations. However, many of the lessons could be adapted for grade levels, and were very interactive. Visited 11/19/09.

Hot Chalk Lesson Plans Page: Language Arts

The site houses a number of lesson plans ranging from drama, to poetry, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, etc.  The site allows you to choose your grade level and subject. While the organization of the site could be improved (no subcategories), the content and variety of the lessons were substantial. I found some good ideas for lessons which could be developed further.
