Search Tips

 

 

Searching on the Internet for information can be quite an overwhelming experience.  There are hundreds of websites that offer a searching ability.  To help narrow down your choices, you can visit the following link to find what I feel are the Best of Search Engines.   

 

Activity:  Pick any one of the search engines provided in the link above.  Pick one of the following topics and use the search tips below to find the best information.  Use the information to write a five page report on the topic, which will also be presented to the class.  Include a works cited list with at least ten resources.

SEARCH TIPS

v      Start with two or three keywords

v      Modify your results by adding or subtracting keywords

v      Try different search words

v      Use specific words instead of general ones

v      Be careful when using the words and, or, and the in search criteria

v      Don't use extra punctuation

v      All search words and operators are not case sensitive

v      Look for words with the same prefix

o        For example, in your query form type health* to find healthy and healthful

v      Search for all forms of a word

o        For example, in the form type run** to find running and ran

v      If you're not having any luck, try a different search engine

v      If you start hitting the same sites from different search engines, you're probably in the right direction
