Butterflies

We have been learning about butterflies and how they grow. They go through several stages to become a butterfly. Use the following website to read about the life cycle of a butterfly. This site will give you the names of each stage. Use those names to fill in the lines on the life cycle chart below. http://www.tooter4kids.com/LifeCycle/Stages.htm

Now that you know a little more about the butterfly’s life cycle, click on the following link to watch the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly. Remember, it takes several days for the butterfly to change. This is a time lapse video which means they video taped the transformation over several days and played the video very fast so that you can see the transformation in a shorter amount of time. http://www.pmsd.k12.pa.us/showcase/butterfly/video.html After watching the video, write one thing that you found interesting.

When a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, we all know that they fly to areas that have a lot of food. Monarch butterflies eat a lot of milkweed. If there are fewer milkweed plants, there will be fewer butterflies. Look at the graph below. It shows the number of butterflies in one area each year.

Why do you think there are less butterflies last year than there were in 2006-2007? What might have happened? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
