I. Efficient and Ethical Information-Seeking Behavior

As a school media specialist, I will model effective strategies to locate and use information for my students.  It will be part of my job to teach legal and ethical practices and to demonstrate a variety of strategies to locate, evaluate and use information in a variety of formats for diverse purposes.

Artifact and Reflection

Based on the knowledge of a certain group of users- sixth grade students in the Outdoor Education Program- I researched various selection sources to find appropriate reference materials for their use. For each of the resources that I found and thought may be appropriate for purchase for this target group, I compiled various information for my records.  This was to help justify the purchases as well as to explain to the person in charge of purchasing the reason for the selection. I included the type of resource, the bibliographic information including year of publication, an annotation of the work, currency of the work, scope of source, intended audience, other formats available, and locations of professional reviews of the work.  I also included two possible questions that could be answered by using the source.  I myself found the answers and described how I used the resource in order to find my answer, proving to me that the source was appropriate for my target users, and provided experience on how I would model searches for my students.
