Standard One   Use of Information and Ideas

I. Efficient & Ethical Information-Seeking Behavior         II. Literacy and Reading         III. Access to Information

IV. Stimulating Learning Environment

As the manager of the largest classroom in the school, it is important that I constantly provide a warm and positive climate within the media center. The media center is used by all members of the school community for reading, research and the use of newest technologies.  It needs to be a place where patrons feel welcomed, safe and able to learn. Keeping shelves in order, maintaining attractive displays of materials and displaying student and staff artwork are some of my techniques for creating and maintaining the space where everyone wants to spend their time.

Artifact and Reflection

What an incredible experience being part of a brand new school!  Being the only media assistant when we opened, I was able to provide input and suggestions to the media specialist which helped make the media center our own. I had previous experience working in a high school media center and I was able to contribute my knowledge of this particular group of users to the overall plan of the media center.  We set up shelves in ways we thought logical to our users, and were able to avoid creating trouble spots, or blind spots, where students could take advantage of the media center rules. I think that my experience as a media assistant in a brand new building was the best way to learn how to create and promote a stimulating learning environment for my school community. The students and staff at my school agreed that the media center was a very warm and welcoming place to relax, read and learn.
