Standard One   Use of Information and Ideas

I. Efficient & Ethical Information-Seeking Behavior        III. Access to Information         IV. Stimulating Learning Environment

II. Literacy and Reading

I believe incentive programs for reading is one way to re-ignite the desire to read among our students.  Other ideas I have for promoting and encouraging reading at the middle school level include book talks, showing students reading webs to help them locate books similar to their interests, promoting participation in the Maryland Black-Eyed Susan program, and a summer reading incentive program.  I also plan to make reading for the 25 Book Initiative a priority, soliciting incentives and assistance from the PTA and business partners from the community.

Artifact and Reflection

Involving students in the promotion of books and reading was the basis for this reading lesson.  After reading a book that they like, students list the title of the book in the center of the page. Branching out like a web around the center, they find other books that are by the same author, have similar plots, themes, genres or have won awards. The Walk Two Moons Web is an example of a book which I created a reading web for and have displayed in the library. Having students make these webs and putting them on display in the media center will help encourage other students to read the titles their peers have recommended.  This exercise is an example of how I promote leisure reading and model my own personal enjoyment of reading to my students.
