Clip Art

Clip art is a fast and easy way for teachers to add zest to any document or Web page. Since thousands of clip art Web sites exist, the task of finding a good site with exactly what you are searching for can be exhausting. I have perused tons of clip art sites and have selected my favorites, which are listed below. These sites are user-friendly for teachers and students alike, and have been chosen because of their high quality images, especially in the area of visual art.

Discovery School - Clip Art Gallery

This site is great for teachers because the clip art images are geared toward educational use and are divided into academic subjects. I especially like the art category, which has several black and white images of art materials and media. To assist students with confusing written objectives and directions for assignments, these images could be inserted next to each step to help students who are visual thinkers.  http://school.discovery.com/clipart/

Microsoft Office Online – Clip Art and Media

This Web gallery is designed to work with Microsoft applications and fairly simple to use. The site offers thousands of high-quality clip art images in a remarkable 47 different categories. Several of the images are 3-D graphics or photos. The Decorative Elements category is really nice and offers interesting ways to jazz-up a page that I have not seen anywhere else.  http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/default.aspx?lc=en-us

      Classroom Clipart

If you can tolerate the blinking advertisements and pop ups, Classroom Clipart would be a wonderful resource for any teacher. In addition to clip art, the site features free downloads of photos in variety of categories. The architecture images would be great for art lessons and could also be incorporated into lessons for several other subject areas. The seashell category is definitely my favorite, featuring 63 detailed pen and ink drawings of seashells that could be used for decorative as well as technical purposes.  http://classroomclipart.com/

Clips Ahoy – Free Clip Art Island

Clips Ahoy features hundreds of free clip art in the usual, as well as not-so-usual categories. The school category is great and even features clips of students playing at recess. This site is the only place where I have found clip art of celebrities and body/ facial parts. Unfortunately, this site produced an absurd amount of pop ups that were difficult to close.  http://www.clipsahoy.com/index2.html

Go Graph Clip Art

Go Graph offers the most categories of clip art that I have found. The Animals section, for example, breaks down into 149 separate categories, with 18 categories dedicated just to fish. The Drawing, Painting, and Fashion categories could also be useful for art teachers. The site also contains other types of graphics and multimedia that could enhance activities and projects.  http://www.gograph.com/fusion/EN/DisplayCategorie/Category01.cfm?cfid=81200502&cftoken=96842023&Position=2400
