Teacher Created Web Sites

I looked through many websites that were created by teachers. My two favorite are as follows:

First Place

High school math teacher Jill Rogier of Countryside High School in Clearwater, Florida at http://it.pinellas.k12.fl.us/teachers/rogierj/. Her site is targeted to the students in her class.

I like her site because it has very structured layout, and it looks orderly. I also like the color combination of blue and yellow on a white background. This adds interest to the page, and keeps it easy to read. The best part of her site is the link to homework problems for the semester. This gives the students an idea of what their workload will be, and it is a good resource if they are absent from school.

As for criticism, I would recommend that she use a bigger font to make it easier to read. I think it would look more aesthetically pleasing if she were to use several similar fonts to separate the different sections. And for content, I think that she should list the agenda that will be covered in class, as well as teat dates. This would lead to a well-rounded site.

Second Place

Fourth grade teacher Claudia Hughner of Vista Grande School in Rancho Palos Verdes, California at http://www.pvpusd.k12.ca.us/teachweb/hughner/index.html. Her site is targeted to the parents of her students.

I like her site because she has a great “Welcome” banner. It sets a positive tone for the site. I also like how she uses the pencil as a divider between contact information and class information. This gives the reader a visual cue for where to look for information. Sha has also created a link to the daily schedule and to the homework policy, which will help her when she interacts with the parents.

I would recommend that she use a different background color for her page because the dark blue lettering on the blue background is a little hard to read. I would also advise her to put the contact information for herself and the school on her site. And she should create links to the other teachers within her grade, since students in elementary school tend to see different teachers for different subjects.
