Elective #12: School Library
Media Websites
Three great school
library media websites:
1.) Walter
Johnson High School Media Center, Montgomery County,
MD
http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/wjhs/mediactr/index.html
This website is attractive.
It has helpful links, such as work cited and online resources, for
students and teachers. It is well
organized. This website is a real
resource for the school community.
2.) Naples High School Media Center, Naples,
Florida
http://collier.k12.fl.us/nhs/lmc/
I like how this website has lots of links and they are well
organized. I like the information about
citing sources and all of the online resources.
These are great for students in class or doing homework. My favorite part is the lists of top ten
favorite books by students. That is a
great idea!
3.) Roberto
Clemente Middle School Media Center, Montgomery
County, MD
http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/clementems/academics_media.shtml
This site is attractive.
I like how it promotes reading through pod casts of books. The media center "useful links"
includes information about bibliography creating and curricular links.
Components that
should be included on a school library website:
- Online Resources. These online resources will vary by
school and county, but would be an important component for any library
website.
- Information about how to do works
cited. This is useful to any student doing a research project.
- Current Library Events or
Announcements. This could
include information about an author visit, the end-of-the-school year due
date, or other library announcements or events.
- Book List. I love the idea of including ideas about
recommended reading. This is
helpful for students looking for something new to read. It is also helpful for parents who might
be looking for a book for their child.
The book list might include information about this year's
Black-Eyed Susan books. I like how Naples
High School media center page
(listed above) has lists of students' top ten favorite books.
- Games. The students at our school love to come
in the media center during their free time and play games on the
internet. We have a list of
school-appropriate game sites that they may visit when they have free time
in the library. Here is the link on
our media center website to the games that students may play: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/bakerms/mediacenter/skillbuilders.html
- Photos of Library. I like Walter
Minkel's idea in his article "Tis a Gift to be Simple" of
including photos of the library, students, and staff. Students' pictures should never be
accompanied by their names for web safety reasons.
