As you know, the United States started in the east with the 13 colonies and spread westward.  Today we will be researching and mapping the westward expansion of the United States by using a number of different maps.  Afterward, you will have an opportunity to reflect on what you learned by answering several questions.

1.)  Please go to this link and print out the blank map:

http://www.50states.com/maps/print/usamap.htm

2.)  There are several things you will label on your map.  I am giving you several different maps on the web to look for the information.  No one map will have all the answers to all of the questions.  You will need to dig and look at a number of different maps to find all of the information you need.

Please draw and color these features on the blank map you just printed out:

a.)  Draw the Proclamation Line of 1763 on your map.

b.)  Color the 13 colonies light blue.

c.)  Color the Louisiana Purchase green.

d.)  Color the Northwest Territories pink.

e.)  Draw a boundary line between Mexico and the United States as it would look like in 1844.

f.)  Color what Texas annexed in 1845 yellow.

g.)  Color what was ceded by Mexico in 1848 grey.

h.)  Color the Gadsden Purchase purple.

i.)  Color the Oregon Territory orange.

3.)  Reflect.

a.)  Were you surprised how much of the United States used to be part of Mexico?

b.)  Territory was acquired by different ways:  purchase, war, or other ways.  Name different ways the United State acquired land.  Write down specific examples.

c.)  What did you learn that you didn't know before?  Did anything surprise you as you created your map?
