I am the media specialist and Acceleration and Enrichment Specialist at an elementary school. I have decided to put together a list of collaboration projects for those students to chose from if they are interested.
Amateur Astronomy via Spacekids
http://leonid.hq.nasa.gov/osskids/orgs/index.htm
This would be a great site for students interested in astronomy. To get started all the student would need is binoculars or a telescope and a pocket sized “field guide”. This site links to two large computer controlled telescopes using adaptive optics. The pictures are spectacular.
Postcards From America
http://www.postcardsfrom.com/index.html
Travel the U.S. with Ken and Priscilla. Ken is the photographer and Priscilla writes the captions and the fun facts. Post cards will be emailed to you website each week. Students can track the places on a map and learn about the states and collect the fun facts and stamps.
Journey North
A global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change.
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/
Students can track the weather and migration patterns of animals such as, monarch butterflies, bald eagle, whopping crane and more. The site tells you what materials you need, there is a place to post your findings and you can read what other students have written.
Jane Goodall Institute
Students can raise money to be a chimpanzee guardian. The $100.00 will be used to care for the chimpanzee. The students will be given a biography of the chimpanzee, poster, certificate of guardianship and information about Gombe Stream Research Center.
Friends and Flags
http://www.friendsandflags.org/
This group promotes multicultural awareness by connecting classrooms around the world. The students can post stories and poems on the website. There is a list of activities the students can participate in with the school they are connected to.
Newsday
http://www.gsn.org/gsh/project/newsday/
Students all over the world can write news stories about the happening in their school, town or country. The students will post their stories on the website. Students will be able to read stories written by children from all over the world.
Online Expeditions
http://www.gsn.org/expeditions/index.html
Students can choose from about six different expeditions. For example, they can follow Max and Bailey, two golden retrievers as they journey over 25,000 miles in the USA in their Harley-Davidson sidecars.
Field Trip Earth
http://www.fieldtripearth.org/
Students can learn about endangered animals by following Dr. Mike Loomis. The students can choose from elephants, sea turtles, wolves and ghost of the southwest. The web site has the latest news updates, maps and facts about the animals. The best part of the site is the field trips.
