Journal Critique I
Article Critique
The journal article entitled, “High tech High” spoke of
a high school with the same name. This high school was very selective
only taking in 200 students for the freshman and sophomore class out of a
thousand applicants. Based in Texas, this school is very liberal.
Students do not have bells to guide them to the next class. No hall
monitors covering their every move. There was a respected relationship
between the students and the teachers. However, the students and teachers
have different roles here than in a normal high school. This school
teaches students the technology of computers and prepares them for
a career in computers. Each class is taught with the use of computers
also. Teachers are there to help the students use computers with the
subject they are learning. Students also have a say in the curriculum.
These students and teachers are very skilled with computers. The author
of the article seemed very pleased by this school because it gave kids with
computer skills a place to grow. Not only were they learning about
the usual high school studies, they learned how to use computers along with
it. The author talked very positively about the school and thought
it was an huge asset for the students. The author also seemed very
impressed with the open relationship that the students had with their teachers.
He started off the article by telling a story of how a student went to the
principal telling him that the teacher’s email server was easy to get into.
The student did not look at the teacher’s emails, but instead he fixed the
problem so other students could not gain access to the emails. The
author thought that this was impressive because this school really made the
students become more responsible by giving them freedom and giving them an
opportunity to do what they love, being with computers.
