WOMEN in the MILITARY?!?!?

Women enter a man’s field!

Today, women in the military are a very common occurrence.  They serve as soldiers, commanders, cooks, or nurses.  Many of you may even know a female soldier!  However, this was not always the case.  Today you will read information about the role of women during the Civil War and World War One to learn about how the role of women in the military has evaluated over time.

First, read the information on women in the Civil War and then read about women in WWI. You may click on the links within the documents if you wish, but it is not required.

When you have finished reading, create a chart to compare the roles of the women.  Use these questions to get started, but then create some of your own.

A.  What roles did women serve in each war?

B.  Were their roles accepted or did they have to hide their participation?

When you have completed your chart, we will go over the information as a whole class. If you finish early, please take out your free reading book that you should have on you at all times!
