American Civil War Collaboration

For 4th-6th Graders

The Oddysey: United States Trek This site is great for students to actively learn about the Civil War from other students around the country.  Besides for learning about topics of interest, students are also able to communicate with the kids who posted on the site and see their pictures.  This can be used for students to e up with a creative project or activity about southern food for example.

Classroom Resources   This has some extremely creative project ideas that combine US history with modern technology and use of graphics and digital cameras.  The teacher can use the ready-made information printed on stamps or postcards for the activities, or personalize it for specific lesson plans.

School World  This site can be used for debating the major issues of the Civil War.  Students can use their persuasive skills to take a stance and debate with other students across the globe.

Teleprojects This site has a most exceptional link to an Underground Railroad project where students have to imagine they needed to really determine how to plan their course to freedom.  Included in this project is a daily log to accompany the students and discussions with others about whether or not they would break fugitive slave laws.  Very Impressive!

Civil War Project This site describes in detail a Civil War project that encompasses understanding and analysis of the key events of the Civil War.  It also included various writing activities.  Although it is geared for teachers of eighth graders, many of these ideas can be incorporated to younger grade classrooms.
