INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES USING WEBCAMS
- A
social studies class studying the Civil War might focus on the battle of
Gettysburg as the turning point in the war. This virtual tour of the battlefield may help students to
understand the progress of this historic battle. http://www.gettysburgaddress.com/HTMLS/Battle.html
- A
social studies class studying the workings of the United States government
could use the Washington, DC web cam to identify important government
buildings and elaborate what work goes on in each. http://www.earthcam.com/usa/dc/metrosquare
- Students
learning about eagles have the opportunity to watch eagles hatch from egg,
grow, and eventually leave the nest. This activity would have to take
place over time but each step in the process could be viewed live and
documented by the students. http://briloon.org/ed/eagle/
- Students
studying either Alaska or the aurora borealis can see live views of the
aurora at this site. This activity could be approached from several
different angles. A writing
assignment might be one where a student would be required to write a diary
entry of an Alaskan settler seeing the aurora borealis for the first
time. http://www.aurorawebcam.com/webcam.php?page=aurorawebcam
- Students
studying the earth and the moon can view the earth and the moon’s
relationship to the earth at different points in the rotation of
each. A working model of the earth
and the moon followed by a oral report could be part of this activity. http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/vplanet.html
