TRANSLATION ISSUES FOR BUSINESS STUDENTS

• Translation of foreign newspapers—the global businessman of tomorrow needs to have an understanding of how world events are viewed within the country he/she is doing business in. Business Principle and Practices students should realize that different countries might have different perspectives on events than Americans do. Current events of a global nature could be discussed in class for the American viewpoint and then different foreign newspapers could be analyzed concerning the same event.

• Marketing students must analyze the economic situation in a foreign country in order to make informed business decisions. They must determine is this would this be a good time to market a product overseas or to import goods from overseas. Does the country impose tariffs or excise taxes? What kind of marketing will be allowed overseas? Research on other countries would provide this information.

• Today’s global economy requires businessmen and women to travel overseas to conduct business. Translations of travel information including currency, hotel and motel accommodations, local tourist sites, airline information is invaluable to the world traveler.

• Accounting rules and regulations vary greatly from country to country. A student considering a career in accounting should be familiar with this fact especially in light of today’s global economy. A study of what those differences are and how they effect the financial standing of a company would be beneficial to accounting students as it would lead to an in-depth analysis of the theories behind the accounting practices.

• Business Law students might enjoy studying a court case from a foreign country. Differences in law and public opinion surrounding the case would be insightful into the cultural differences.
