Animal Classification

Grades 4-5

Introduction: We all love animals. We see them all around us everyday. Some are small, some tall, some hairy, and some are bald. Some of us have pets and some of us do not. In this activity we will gather information about animals to put into a graph. Then we will make a large graph of all of the information we have gathered. You will also be using your internet searching skills to find the information. I have provided you with 5 sites to start with but they won’t take you directly to your answer. I want to see you use what we have practiced.

giraffe       dolphin      porcupine      panda bear

Activity: The people you sit with in class will be your group members. Each of you will research five animals. Make sure they are two different kinds of animals. For example you may choose to do a snake and a mouse, but NOT a cat and a tiger. If you need help choosing your animals see me OR talk to your group members. You will research your animals individually and fill in the chart I give you. Then your group will use the information to compile a graph about the animals in your group.

Uses these websites to do your research:

http://animal.discovery.com/guides/atoz/atoz.html (Animal Planet)

http://www.nwf.org/search/  (this site will let you type in your animal to search for it)

http://now2000.com/kids/zoos.shtml (this is a list of sites that might lead you to your animal)

http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/encyclopedia/index.tmpl (Use this online encyclopedia to search for your animal.)

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/kids/ (National Geographic for Kids homes page)

Copy this graph five times onto chart paper and fill it in using the information your group collected. Each person will use one of their five animals on each chart. Identify the name of your animal in the block marked with a number .  Shade in whether your animal is a vertebrate or invertebrate. I will give you an example in the chart below (so when you copy the chart don’t copy the examples!!)

6: German Shepherd

Number of people in your

group.

5: Giraffe

4: Beta Fish

3: Tree Frog

2: Jellyfish

1: Tiger

Invertebrate

Vertebrate

Classification

Now create another graph using the data that your group collected. Choose something other than classification by vertebrate or invertebrate, for example bald and hairy.

Have fun be creative and display your data so the class will understand it!!!!

Happy Graphing!!!
