Title IX
Introduction:
Title IX was a law passed in 1972 that deals with sex discrimination in educational settings. One of the major impacts of Title IX was in sports and athletic departments. Thirty years later, there is still a great debate within some athletic departments on such issues as what sports should be offered or cut and how funds should be allocated to different programs. The implications of Title IX are widespread; it helped to open many doors that were formerly closed to females. There is also controversy as to whether or not Title IX is completely fair to all programs involved. This lesson will serve to introduce students to the history and implications of the law in the sports community, and also to show some of the history of sexual discrimination.
Task:
Your task will be to act as a panel of four individuals discussing and presenting differing viewpoints on the implications of Title IX. The four panelists will be the Athletic Director, the football coach, the wrestling coach, and a female student. The Athletic Director will present some of the limitations and responsibilities that he/she has with compliance of Title IX. The football coach will present reasons why he feels that his program should get a larger chunk of the athletic budget. The wrestling coach is upset and presents arguments that his program should not be in danger of getting eliminated. The female student is arguing for the school to begin offering a girls lacrosse team. Using some of the available resources, or searching the web for different resources, present how Title IX affects each of the arguments for the different panelists. Using a method of your choosing, present your argument to the other members of your group.
Some of the topics you want to touch on in your arguments are:
1. An overview of Title IX.
2. What was the reasoning behind passing Title IX?
3. What have been the effects of the passing of Title IX?
4. What is the debate about Title IX?
5. What are the implications of Title IX on your position in the panel?
6. Besides sports, what are some other implications of Title IX?
7. Your personal opinions on Title IX and how it may affect you?

Conclusion:
Title IX was a groundbreaking law for females in our country. It has helped to increase the opportunities that women have in our country. It states that schools receiving federal funding cannot discriminate in any of its program on the basis of sex. One of the far-reaching results of Title IX has been an increase in the number of opportunities, scholarships, and participation of females in athletics.
