Journal Article #2
Kosakowski, John (1998). The benefits of information technology ERIC Digest. ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology. Syracuse, NY. ERIC # ED420302.
This article focuses on a variety of educational aspects that benefit from the use of technology in the classroom. The author states that computer aided instruction has gone beyond just drilling and practicing to letting students have more control over their learning, allowing them to work collaboratively, and allowing them to use higher order thinking skills. Although there is not yet a reliable way to measure results, the article suggests that there is research that shows that students improve in areas such as communication skills, writing skills, math skills, working independently and collaboratively, problem solving skills, and critical thinking skills. Another aspect dealt with in the article has to do with students' attitudes. It states that students who use technology in the classroom seem to be more motivated to learn and have better confidence and self-esteem. This is especially true with programs that allow students to work at their own pace. Technology can also benefit faculty in such areas as record keeping, communication with colleagues and parents, and continuing education. Some factors that aid in technology succeeding in the classroom are a plan for integration and funding of programs, continuing education and teacher training, and support from parent, community, and government organizations.
I agree with the article that a child's education can greatly benefit from proper use of technology in the classroom. The article presents some compelling arguments for computer-aided instruction across the curriculum. The one problem that I have with the article is it does not address any of the stumbling blocks that may interfere with a wealth of technology in the classroom. In a perfect system, with endless amounts of resources available to pay for the technology and proper teacher training, then we may see all of the benefits that are mentioned in the article. I hope that technology can eventually be incorporated into all schools so that all students will eventually benefit from the information and tools that are available to them through the use of technology.
