The article focuses on some statistics about the use of computers by children today, cites research for the inclusion technology based instruction, and some criticisms for this type of instruction.  Nearly two-thirds of our children use computers either at school or at home.  Technology is widely used throughout the world and supporters and critics in this article see the need and importance of students knowing how to use the technology.  Studies supporting the use of technology show that when implemented correctly students may show significant learning with the use of computers.  The article used examples of a study in mathematics and writing as showing student improvement.  One criticism for the use of computers is eliminating other programs in order to pay for this technology. Other criticisms and, they are even seen with supporters of technology based instruction, is how to effectively implement computer based instruction and staff development.  The instruction must be age-appropriate and staff must be able to effectively teach using this technology.

I feel that there is a need for students to become competent in new technology.  No matter what career they choose, they will be able to benefit from being able to effectively use technology.  Addressing the criticisms in the article, funding will probably never cease to be an issue because technology will keep improving and upgrades will be needed.  Effectively implementing technology based instruction and continuous staff development are the important factors.  This type of technology in the classroom could help a teacher to reach more students in a given class by giving them the opportunity to work at their own pace.  The more advanced will not get bored and the less advanced will not get frustrated.  Continuous staff development will also be important because the technology will be constantly improving and training will be needed for teachers to learn.
