Instructional
Ideas for
Using Translation Tools
Announcements for parents:
Special
announcements that need to be sent home can be translated. For example:
PTO
meetings, changes in the after school program, band practice schedule
or play
tryouts. Parents of non-English speaking elementary students will need
to be
able to read their child’s homework sheet, in order to keep track of
their
homework.
Students
in
middle or high schools need to be able to read their class schedules.
Student
report cards can be translated for students and parents. In some cases
a report
card in Spanish and English may need to be sent home, depending on the
individual household. The lunch menu could be translated and posted;
one should
also be sent home to parents.
Class Activity sheets:
This
would
be a great help to teachers who have students that don’t speak any
English or
limited English. Class assignments can be translated so students can
complete a
task along with their fellow classmates. I know the goal is to get
non-English
speaking students to learn English, but I think they need to feel
success in
the classroom. This doesn’t necessarily mean that every activity should
be
translated, but there should be some activities that are translated.
This would
be helpful in situations where there is not an ESOL teacher.
Morning Announcements/TV
Broadcast:
In
schools
where non-English speaking students desire to be part of a Morning
Broadcast or
TV Studio Crew, translation of the announcements and news format would
be an
asset. A lot of times, non-English students don’t feel connected
because of the
language barrier. Students feel connected when they are a part of
something,
and being able to be part of the schools Broadcast Crew would offer
this for
them. Not only is translation an asset for the student participating in
the
Broadcast, it will help the other non-English speaking students who are
listening.
Teacher Parent
Conferences:
Any
documentation that is used for parent conferences should be translated.
Student
referral documentation for students having trouble in class, special
needs
documentation (IEP), explanation of grades and report card comments.
All of
this information needs to be translated for the parent, that way the
parent
teacher and students are all on the same page.
