ELECTIVE ASSIGNMENT:  “Translation”

List & Description of 5 Instructional Situations Where Translation Would Be a Valuable Tool:

·        New Student:  A student transfers into the school from another country and does not speak any English.  A translation website could be kept open on a computer to communicate back and forth between the student and teacher and also between the student and other students.

·         ESOL:  A current student that doesn’t have full command of the language and is limited in their vocabulary could use translation websites to help find the right words that they are looking for in their oral speaking as well as written assignments.

·        General Translation:  English-speaking students can use translation websites for figuring out quotes, phrases, and text passages that they come across in their research and do not understand.

·        Pen Pals:  Correspondence with students from other countries would be an incredible experience and most likely would not be possible without translation websites.

·        Extracurricular Activity:  Students that take Spanish and French after school can use translation websites to help them with their work.

Integrating technology into the curriculum is a priority -- if not a mandate -- in most schools today. Most educational technology experts agree, however, that technology should be integrated, not as a separate subject or as a once-in-a-while project, but as a tool to promote and extend student learning on a daily basis. The challenge, of course, is in finding ways to use technology -- and to help students use it -- that don’t take time away from core subjects.
