Introduction

As a consumer math class, we are preparing ourselves for the real world.  We have spent a large amount of the semester talking about handling money and budgeting accounts.  Now is your time to show what you have learned.  Budgets are a part of life and you must maintain a strict financial plan to succeed in life.  The following activity is designed to be a fun way to learn about creating your own budget and spending your parents’ money for the LAST time.

The Task

You have just graduated from High School and your parents want to send you on vacation.  They told you to choose three different places you want to visit and they will send you to one on the three.  There is a catch, they tell you they will only give you 1500 dollars to pay for the entire trip.

You must choose your destinations on the following criteria:

ü     must fly or take a train (no driving)

ü     must eat breakfast daily

ü     must stay in a hotel

ü     Traveling when you get there

ü     must stay for seven days and six night

ü     must leave on a Friday night (after 5pm)

Your parents love you so they are letting you take one friend along with you (they are not going with you).   Oh yes, one more thing you need to show a PowerPoint presentation of your budget and agenda to your parents in order for them to choose with vacation is best for you.  After working hard on your presentation your end result will be a fabulous vacation with your friend. You have one week to plan the three trips.  You may use any resources (at least 3) you have available, including the internet.

By the end of this lesson you will:

-Have used a variety of resources to plan a vacation

-Planned a vacation on a strict budget

The Process

1.      Decide on three places you would like to travel

2.      Find out how you will get there

3.      Divide your budget up into categories (you may want to use the criteria list above)

4.       Find out how you will eat Breakfast everyday

5.      Plan a daily agenda by the hour for seven days (don’t forget to include traveling time)

6.      Create a nine minute PowerPoint presentation on your budget and the three places

You will have 4 days in class to work on this project.

Day 1- In class to plan

Day 2,3,4-Media Center to use computers and other resources. (Remember do not just use the internet you need at least 3 resources and your PowerPoint needs to be finished to present in class on the fifth day.

You will be given nine minutes total to presentation your three choices.  The class will vote on which trip you will be taking.

You will need to do some work outside of class
