5 Instructional Situations for Translations

  1. I send weekly updates via email to all parents. Some students speak Spanish or some other foreign language primarily at home.

  1. I send Interims home along with a newsletter during midterms and final grading periods.  Some students receive the newsletter and have to read it to their parents.  A translated Interim or Newsletter will eliminate cases of misinformation.

  1. Students are sometimes required to send home and sign a STOP Reflection Behavior Form.  Parents are required to read and discuss the inappropriate behaviors with their child.  A translated form will allow the parent to make their own judgments, based on what is written.  They will not have to depend on their child for translation.  We all know that kids leave out important information when they think they will get in trouble.

  1. Parent Conferences are coming up in November.  There is a general parent conference form in English.  To avoid confusion it would be nice to have the form translated to Spanish.  Therefore, Spanish speaking families will have an opportunity to respond and attend.

  1. Weekly contracts are sent home with every child.  The contract shows all homework completed and the Work Study Skills of each child.  Some parents will again have to rely on their child to relay the information stated on the contract. If translations were available, parents could feel involved in their child’s education.  Also, comments parents write back could be translated into English and communication between Non- English speaking parents and teachers would increase.
