 “The First Thanksgiving”

Pilgrims, Indians, turkey, corn, harvest, Mayflower; what do these words remind you of?  Every year on the 4th Thursday in November we celebrate Thanksgiving.  It is a time to spend with our family and friends, and a time when people are thankful for the many blessing they have received.

Well, what do Pilgrims and Indians, turkey, corn, harvest and the Mayflower have to do with Thanksgiving?  What do you know about “The First Thanksgiving”?

For this activity you will be researching the topic of Thanksgiving.  You will be using a graphic organizer to show what you know about this topic, what you want to know about this topic and what you learned about this topic.

First, print out the KWL graphic organizer to chart your responses on. Your topic will be “The First Thanksgiving”.   Write down what you know about “The First Thanksgiving” and what you would like to know about “The First Thanksgiving”.

Now, read the following stories, “The Pilgrims and America’s First Thanksgiving”, and “The Pilgrims’ 1621 Thanksgiving”.

Did you learn some interesting new facts?  Write them down on your KWL chart under what I learned.  Be prepared to share what you learned about “The First Thanksgiving” with the class.
