Theory Section of Portfolio

Prompt: This section of the porfolio should be in the form of a formal paper with five main sections as described below. Appropriate references should be given in APA style.

Format: In HTML. The page should be hyperlinked to/from the main 590 portfolio page.

Section 1. Introduction. (75-150 words) should be a short introduction to your paper. Tell us what you are going to say.

Section 2. Learning Theory. (750 to 1,500 words) should provide a basic review of learning theories. One model for outlining this review could be Gillani's approach--(a) behavioral (b) cognitive, (c) social, and (d) psychological--although you are not restricted to that outline. This section does not have to be in depth, but should make it clear that you are aware of the broad range of learning theory.

Section 3. Learning Theory and Online Learning Environments. (500 to 1,000 words) should discuss the implications of these learning theories on online learning. Here, you may give examples of other online learning activities based on your readings and research. This section should make it clear that you understand how learning theory can (or can not) contribute to the design of online learning.

Section 4. Case Study. (750 to 1,500 words) should contain two parts.

Part One should outline your own personal learning theory as it applies to your particular discipline. Are you a constructivist? Behaviorist? Even if you are a pluralist/pragmatist/agnostic about learning theory and pedagogy, this section should make it clear what you believe and/or how you approach online class design.

Part Two should discuss in detail the theoretical/pedagogical choices you made in designing your online class. Give specific examples. Connect the theory to the specific application in your class. Were you able to implement your own personal learning theory? How? (or Why not?). Did you use one overall theoretical /pedagogical approach? Did you use more than one? How? Why? Discuss the specific choices you made and give details on how you carried those choices out.

Section 4. Conclusion. (75-150 words) Sum up what you said.
