This
is a study tour of Egypt, the birthplace of one of the
oldest and greatest civilizations ever known. Today, it
is also the largest and most important nation in the Arab
World. In the last 7 millennia, Egypt was ruled by the Pharaohs, Greeks,
Romans, Muslims,
Turks, and Europeans, and they all left their mark on its
history
and
culture. The students will explore Egypt's past,
the legacy of the Pharaohs by visiting and learning about
the Great Pyramids
and
the Sphinx in Giza by Cairo, the Step Pyramid in Sakkara,
the valley of the
kings with its many temples in Luxor and the great Temple
of Ramses II in Abu Simbel. However, we will also learn
about the Islamic
legacy of
Egypt by visiting some of the mosques in Cairo, the Citadel
of Saladin, the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, as well
as witness
and experience
a Muslim service on Friday in Al-Azhar mosque, home to
the oldest existing university in the world. We will also
visit an ancient
synagogue and
the 7th century Coptic Church, known as the Hanging Church.
In addition, students will learn about the history of the
modern Egyptian
state,
the socio-political system in Egypt, and current developments
in the Middle
East. One other highlight of this trip is experiencing
Egyptian culture first hand.
