Commission on Teacher Credentialing - Teaching Mathematics Advisory
Panel
The Commission on Teacher Credentialing has appointed twenty
individuals to serve as panel members to consider the need for,
and, as appropriate, propose recommended standards for a preparation
program for the Mathematics Specialist Credential. In addition,
the Commission has asked the advisory panel to delve into the
larger picture related to determining the mathematics needs
of students across the K-12 continuum. Considerations then need
to be given whether to change authorizations to reflect preparation
received or to address teacher preparation to conform to authorizations.
The panel begins work on March 30-31, 2009.
Georgia
Early
Childhood (P-5) Mathematics Endorsement
In 2005 the Georgia Professional Standards Commission
released criteria for the development of programs to allow teachers
certified in grades P-5 to earn a mathematics endorsement. The
endorsement can be earned in conjunction with initial certification
or as an add-on to an existing certificate. Georgia has a separate
set of criteria for coaching, so the mathematics endorsement
does not speak to coaching/leadership skills.
Michigan
Elementary Mathematics Specialist Program
Michigan’s program is a K-8 mathematics endorsement
for placement on an elementary teaching certificate. Teacher
preparation institutions offer approved programs based on Michigan
State Board of Education K-8 mathematics teacher endorsement
standards. Teacher candidates or teachers who wish
to earn this endorsement complete an approved program and pass
the Michigan
Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) mathematics-elementary
test (#089). Thirty-three of Michigan’s
34 approved teacher preparation institutions offer the K-8 mathematics
endorsement program. Evidence of Michigan’s elementary
mathematics specialist preparation is apparent as a “6-8
mathematics” endorsement carried on an elementary teaching
certificate, which itself currently authorizes K-5 All Subjects.
