The Director of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs leads the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, which has as its mission to provide visible leadership and direction for the College’s efforts on behalf of diversity and multiculturalism; offer programs and provide guidance and assistance, both academic and non-academic, to underrepresented students; support and coordinate student groups that serve the needs of diverse cultures and populations; develop programs and services to promote diversity awareness and understanding within the larger campus community; and be a resource to students, faculty and staff in their efforts on behalf of diversity and multiculturalism. Specifically, the Director of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs
A. Provides leadership and oversight of a comprehensive student services department, including student retention and success programs, diversity education, and student leadership opportunities:
- Coordinates multicultural programs including Heritage Month Sequences, Diversity Week, Multicultural Student Weekend, and leadership development programs for underrepresented students.
- Attends weekly meetings of the Student Outreach Network, sharing information about at-risk students and participating in efforts to respond to the specific needs of these students.
- Advises and supports multicultural/underrepresented groups as necessary and assists in their programming and activities including the Multicultural Leaders Banquet, leadership training programs and budget preparation.
- Oversees the Sankofa Mentoring Program and the Film Series. The Sankofa Mentoring Program provides mentoring, leadership training, and cultural exposure for underrepresented student populations.
- Assists with International Student Orientation.
B. Works in partnership with the campus community to help create and sustain an environment that is inclusive and responsive to diversity and prepares students to lead in a multicultural world.
C. Serves as a resource and a support to individuals and groups that contribute to campus diversity and multiculturalism and promotes the broad range of the College’s diversity programs, events and activities.
D. Through the Diversity Leadership Team and the Campus Diversity Council monitors and assesses the College’s success in meeting its commitment to diversity and provides a venue for new plans and programs.
E. Manages the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs with responsibilities for budget and supervision of staff.
F. Actively participates in committees, workshops, conferences, and professional memberships of a multicultural nature in the local Baltimore-Washington area.
G. Works closely with the VP and Dean of Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and reports to the Provost.
