    Course Offerings

    1101,1102 Elementary Spanish: 
    The acquisition of oral/aural skills through intensive exposure to Spanish used both as the medium of communication and the object of study. It enables the student accurately to express his or her daily experiences in spoken and written Spanish, and to understand communications of a moderate level of difficulty. These courses satisfy a basic liberal arts requirement for Foreign Language.

    1125 Studies in Hispanic Literature in English Translation:
    Spanish and Spanish American literature in translation. The topic changes each year. This course satisfies a Humanities requirement and is cross listed with Comparative Literature 1125.

    1131 Cultural History of Spain: 
    A study of diverse aspects of the culture and history of Spain and the contributions of Hispanic culture to Western Society. This course is taught in English.

    2211, 2212 The Hispanic World: Language and Society: 
    Practice in oral and written Spanish while analyzing the social elements and cultural expressions of the Hispanic World. Prerequisite: Spanish 1102 or equivalent. This course satisfies a Foreign Language requirement.

    2223 Cultural History of Latin America: 
    Historical and contemporary culture of Latin America. This course is taught in English. This course satisfies Global Perspective and /or Humanity requirements. It is cross-listed with cross-cultural Studies 2223 and History 2223. It is offered in alternate years.

    3301, 3302 Introduction to the Study of Hispanic Literature: 
    Analysis of major representative works from Spanish and Latin American literatures. Prerequisite: Spanish 2212 or the equivalent. It satisfies Foreign Language and/or Humanity requirements.

    3310; 4410 Advanced Studies in Spanish: 
    A course designed for upper-class Spanish majors with a different topic dealing with aspects of the Hispanic literature or culture each semester. Examples of Spanish 4410:

    • Literatura Medieval Española
    • Teatro del Siglo de Oro
    • Cervantes
    • La Generación del 98
    • Teatro españa del siglo XX
    • Novela / Cine de España
    • Literatura latinoamericana contemporánea
    Prerequisite: Spanish 3302; placement in 3310 by permission of the instructor. It satisfies a Humanities requirement.

    3320 Spanish/English Translation:
    Practice in the art of rendering a text from one language to another using both literary and nonliterary sources. Prerequisite: Spanish 2212, or permission of the instructor.

    2265; 2266; 3365; 3366; 4465; 4466 Special Topics in Spanish: 
    The study of a selected topic in the discipline. Different topics are chosen for each offering, based on students' interests and needs.

    2295; 2296; 3395; 3396; 4495; 4496 Internships in Spanish: 
    Supervised field experiences in appropriate settings, usually off-campus, designed to assist student in acquiring and using skills and knowledge of the discipline unique to the selected topic.

    2298; 2299; 3398; 3399; 4498; 4499 Independent Studies in Spanish: 
    Directed study planned and conducted with reference to the needs of those students who are candidates for departmental honors. Qualified students who are no candidates for such honors but who desire to do independent studies are also admitted with permission of the Department.

     Note: All of the above courses are four (4) credits toward graduation with the exception of internships and independent studies which can be zero (0) to four (4) credits.
