Introduction:  This web link bibliography focuses on internet materials and resources helpful to High School Social Studies students and teachers.  It also includes links that provide information about culture, global issues, and current events, as well as instructional links for Secondary Social Studies teachers!


Instructional Links

Education World: The Educators Best Friend - This site provides teachers with examples of lesson plans in all subjects and offers technology tips for integrating technology into the classroom to educators.  It includes the ABCs of email, classroom management tips, and so much more!  Also, this site includes activities that focus on the importance of voting and elections, and a Decision 2004 Webquest, which can be used by Secondary Social Studies teachers.

Core Learning Goals for Social Studies - This site provides an overview of Maryland's Core learning goals for Government, United States History, and World History. These goals can help to provide teachers with targets/objectives that students need to reach in order to meet Maryland State standards.

Social Studies Lesson Plans and Resources - This site offers ideas for Social Studies lessons and teaching strategies.  It includes a Webquest page with links to training information and Web-based lesson plans and activities developed by teachers from many different states, as well.  There are 95 lesson plans on this site, including, but not limited to, lessons on government, civil rights, women's suffrage, the legal system, and economics.  This entire site is great for secondary social studies teachers!

Yahoo! Education - Allows teachers and parents to track school performance around the country.  This site is beneficial to teachers who want to compare the performance of their students with other schools' performances.  Teachers can then get information on how to improve their techniques and/or teaching strategies.  Teachers can also view parent reviews of any school at this site.  Also, the site includes articles that focus on education issues in the United States.

Discovery School - This site provides K-12 teachers with a variety of topics to use or include in their lessons.  There are a great amount of topics concerning contemporary studies, American history, and World history.

Creating Conditions for Learning- This site introduces The Classroom Organization and Management Program (COMP), which is a research-based program that teaches educators to manage their classrooms in order to promote student achievement.  Also, the site provides a long lists of tips, developed by other teachers, for teachers to follow to create a friendly learning environment!

Spartanburg County School District Three - WebQuests  - This site, developed by the Spartanburg County School District in Glendale, SC, provides information on the importance of WebQuests and tips for creating WebQuests.  Teachers can view a WebQuest development guide and/or learn how to copy pictures onto their WebQuests.  There is a long list of WebQuests that have been previously created by teachers, also.  Teachers, who plan on creating or getting ideas for WebQuests, can view different WebQuests for different subjects!

PBS TeacherSource -  The first site offers over 4,500 free lessons plans to K-12 social studies teachers.  It also features a list of television programs everyday of the week. 
The second website offers information on technology and teaching.  Teachers should definitely view this page to get the latest facts and research about technology’s impact on learning!

Reading-Teaching Tips - This site is developed to support teachers in their effort to help students understand and comprehend what students’ read and write.  It also explains the meaning of “balance literacy” and provides information on choosing the right book and reading strategies for students.  Teachers should visit this site to learn more about effective teaching strategies and view articles that discuss different teaching techniques.

Links for Students

The Social Studies Help Center - This WebPage offers help to high school students who are studying American government, history, and economics.  The site also has a link that tells students how to write a research paper, as well as examples of previously written research papers.  Included in the research paper link is information about plagiarism, citing sources, paraphrasing, etc.  This site can be helpful to teachers, too, because it has a link that discusses the benefits and roles of technology in the classroom.

Culture Matters - This is a cross-cultural training workbook developed by the Peace Corps for teachers and students (8th grade through college).  Chapters in this Web-workbook include: Understanding Culture, Styles of Communication, Social Relationships, etc.  The workbook was developed for students interested in joining the Peace Corps, but can provide social studies classes with information about culture and diversity.

Sociology Online - Provides an overview of the fundamentals of sociology, including sociological theory, social class, globalization, and technology.  This site also includes games and quizzes so students can test their knowledge of the information included in the site.  This page is helpful to high school students who are taking sociology as an elective.

US News - Each week, this site presents different current events and news stories, as well as activies for students.  Students who are researching politics, war, or other social issues should go to this link for information.

The Washington Post - Find the latest world, national, and local news at this site.  This site is good for students looking for current events materials to use in their social studies classes.  Teachers should also visit this site to search for topics to use in their social studies classes.

America's Story - Click on this link to get a profile of any state in the United States, find out more information about any president in U.S. history, or jump back in time to study a period of American history. This animated site is good for those studying American history, especially elementary and middle school students!

History and Politics Out Loud - This site provides a list famous speeches given by important figures in American history -  John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., William J. Clinton, etc. - and allows students to actually hear the speeches out loud!

The History Channel - Find out interesting facts and info about any time period in world or American history.  This site is great for students of all ages who are studying history and/or current events.  Students can view video clips, listen to famous speeches, or see exhibit at this site!

- This site provides activities and WebQuests for social studies students.  Students can work in pairs or groups and try out some of quizzes and activites at this site.  They can answer questions about historical figures including Joan of Arc and Harriet Tubman.

Office of the Mayor - This is Mayor Martin O’Malley’s official website.  At this site, students can read the Mayor’s neighborhood news flashes, find out more about the Mayor’s new plans for Baltimore, visit links of the Baltimore Municipal Departments and Offices.  Social Studies students, especially high school students who are studying Government, can learn more about the roles and duties of the Mayor at this site.
