The gospel
choir at McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College)
was established in the fall of 1994 and since then has influenced
the school and surrounding community in many special ways. The
choir has brought diversity and Black Gospel Music into awareness
like no other college class, performance ensemble or event.
The choir
meets every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in Big Baker Chapel
on campus. In addition to its spiritual purpose, participants
can also receive college credit. Members, coming from various
different backgrounds and aspects of the McDaniel and local
community, unite together in song, rhythm, and dance.
The objective
is to cover the three major styles of gospel music in one class
and as one choir. Spirituals, traditional and contemporary styles
of gospel music are studied, with the end result being a joyful
noise and an invitation for everyone to join the mighty chorus.
The McDaniel
College Gospel Choir is open to all college students; it is
an academic class and is covered under the policies of the college
in regards to diversity and religious freedom. Absolutely everyone
is welcome to come, join the choir, receive an academic credit,
and sing.
