Placement and Graduate Study in History

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Graduate study or the start of careers in business, banking, education, diplomacy, and law are some of the opportunities for history majors upon graduation.  Recent graduates have joined business and brokerage firms, enrolled in law and graduate schools, begun teaching careers, and entered military and government service.

Considerations Before Graduation

In business and government, history majors are hired for their ability to think and write cogently--in short, to make sense of information in an Information Age.  The study of history presents notes many questions and issues that don't have easy or obvious answers, and the more you investigate them, the better information processor — and the more employable — you become.

History as a Career

There are a variety ways of pursuing history as a full-time career.  Teaching history is one of them, but not the only one.  Historians are employed as researchers in business and government, as archivists and preservationists, and some work for themselves or in partnerships as consultants.  Your advisor and the other members of the Department will be happy to talk with you about masters programs and opportunities in what is known as "applied" or "public" history.
